Loes van Duijvendijk

GG – Could you tell us a little about yourself? How did your work in art begin?

My name is Loes van Duijvendijk and I’m a photographer from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. My father was an architect so I grew up with an interest in drawing, art and architecture. I really liked the visits with my father at construction sites and museums. That’s why I first wanted to be an interior designer, but during my first year at the art academy I realized that I was more into photography. My way of thinking was more poetical and I started to have this feeling that photography was the best way to approach and explore the world around me. In the end, it explains my interest in photographing architecture, public space and the urban landscape.

GG – We would like to know what do you think about your photography, what meanings, messages you put?

I got an enormous fascination for the phenomenon of “city”. A phenomenon that I want to discover and understand with the help of my camera. The desire to visually discover, observe and document a place is the basis of my work as an architecture and landscape photographer. I let my curiosity and intuition guide me to arrive at a visual statement about a specific area. Eventually, my poetic images are an ode to the place where they have been taken and aims to challenge us to view the urban environment with new eyes.

GG – How would you define your work in few words?

Poetic, colourful, vivid and minimalistic.

GG – Who are some of your favourite artists, musicians, writers, film directors? Are there any specific reference you keep constantly in mind?

I got so many but some of my favourite photographers include Luigi Ghuirri, Aglaia Konraad, Wolfgang Lehrner and Guido Guidi. And I love the short stories about imaginable cities in the magical book ‘Invisible Cities’ by Italo Calvino.

GGWhat kind of music usually accompanies you? It can also affect work, right?

Depends on what my state of mind is. But it varies between old-school hip hop, soul, electronic, reggae, funk and sometimes classical music.
